Changing from gravel to sand

I have been considering changing to a sand substrate. I like the way that sand looks in a tank. And would like some experience with sand before I buy a larger tank and get in over my head.

If I change over, do I need to cycle my tank again? And also are there any unforseen complications I sould consider?

I would be changing over a 30 gallon tank, with a pleco, and a ghost knife.

You would not have to cycle your tank if you are using the same filter.Just watch the closeness of your intake tube as to not suck up any sand
