Changing Media?

I was wondering if there is something special I should do when changing the inserts in my filter? I understand that there is good bacteria in the inserts that I probably dont want to lose. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Well, usually you can rinse them out a few times (in tank water, NOT tap water) which just gets rid of excess waste, but keeps the BB. When you do need to replace them it is recommended to replace just one at a time - which is also why many people suggest having at least two filters on any tank. It would also be recommended to only rinse one side at a time also.

dont change em till they are falling apart ,I keep hob inserts as long as possible and only clean em in a bucket of tank water maybe once a month or so depending on need
