I would reuse a couple of times by swishing the pad in water removed during wc day, but now use floss and change out weekly.

Depends on the media. If it's Sponge materiel, I have some Aquaclear 70 and 500 sponges I've been cleaning for over 10 years, or till they fall apart(new ones NOT made as well as the old ones/cheaper material & larger pores).

It should be realized though that I (and many others) can do this because we also use dedicated bio media (or secondary/tertiary filters)that only gets rinsed/ dunked/agitated in old tank water.

For my tank with cartridges (Whisper 40), I also have an eheim 2217 full of bio, so I just blast the whisper cartridge outside and put it back in the whisper 40.

Point of my post, as long as you have dedicated bio media that doesn't get thrown away, or cleaned with chlorinated water, you can technically just blast the heck out the the mechanical carrtidge or sponge block with your outside water-hose nozzle to get it squeaky clean if ya want with no issues. Or you can replace it if you like.

YMMV...
