I bought some Marineland Diamond Blend activated carbon with ammonia fighting crystals for the extra slots in my filters. How long is this stuff good for before it needs changed out?

I used to change my regular carbon every 2 weeks.... now I use chemipure and change every 3 months....

I quit using carbon all together.....I use crushed coral in all levels on the canister filter...In the mechanicals(HOB), use one layer of floss and fill the rest with those hollow tubes used in Fluvals, o the FilStar stars....

I'm with Importracer, ditch the carbon (save the $$) and use the space for more bio-media... if you are doing large enough, regular, water changes then you do not need it...

Couldn't afford the one with scrubbing bubbles too, huh? ;)

Seriously tho...

Before I recommend not using the carbon...

Do you have problem that you need the carbon?

Changeout depend on the efficiency of your filter and the bio-load of the tank. Two weeks to two months is about right tho.

Why are you using Crushed Coral? I know it will stabilize KH but it can also raise PH, it doesn't do much else unless you know something I don't?

i agree with Digthemlows why would u use coral it must be a nightmare trying to keep the PH levels down and at the same time i dont see how it would be a better sub for carbon, i dont use any carbon just keep up with ur water changes and you'll be better off.:headbang2

No scrubbing bubbles this time lol. Well I originally started using the extra carbon for the ammonia. Take it back to 4 or 5 months ago when I got my first 38 gallon and they said an Aqueon 30 power filter would be great haha. Well I learned that it wasnt and got an Emperor 400 for the tank. But I was using the carbon while the Emperor was getting established. Since then I've been kinda using the carbon for smell since my girlfriend always *****es. I dont smell it tho

However what would you guys recommend keeping it mind I use HOB filters?
