well im getting sick of my white sand. It always gets filthy and filled with algae. I was going to use my python to suck out the sand in to a bucket. Any tips on putting regular old gravle in, when there is already fish in the tank?

just drop it in slowly and carefully

if the fish are smart the will just swim to the other side of the tank (wich happens in most cases)

a regular garden hose would suck the sand out much faster than the python. for adding new gravel, rinse it well, then pour it all in on one side slowly, the fish will go to the other side while you do it. then just even the gravel out when your done.

It's not the sand. If you have algae then there is something up with your parameters.

How often do you clean you sand? Water changes? Are you overfeeding the fishes? Is it in direct contact with sunlight? How long do you keep your tank lights on?

Major factor: Are you overstocked?

Answering these questions will help determine what is your problem. Changing to gravel will more than likely produce the same results of having algae. Filthy substrate is dependent on you, meaning do your clean your substrate while doing partial water changes.

Water parameters are perfect. Yes one side of the tank gets hit by light in the morning. but i leave that light off on that side of the tank til about 4:30pm and as far as being over stocked i highly doubt it. I have 2- 4" peakocks 2 -yellow labs and a 7" pleco in a 125gal tank. My lights are on for about 8hours. The agae is due to the sun light cause it only grows on the window side of the tank. I do water changes and clean the sand every 2 weeks.
