Hi everyone. I change the water in my 180 tank. I know that big changes in temperator is not good for fish so what about the water you add back in the tank. Would it cause a big change in water temp.? I get the water from the sink but I havent had any problems. If I need to, is there any way to get the tap water to the same temp. Thanks in advance, Ed.

I have a 180 and I've never done anything to heat it up. I use water straight from the tap to the tank and have not had any problems. Maybe fast temp. change isn't as deadly but I don't think thats it. Probably just some kind fluke.

I use a meat thermometer that I stick in the drain of my sink under my python, I measure the temp of water coming out of the tank with it, and match the tap water to that temp. I have killed 3 balas from temp shock once, darn cat jumped in the sink and bumped the tap handle knocking it colder, I didn't notice until I had 1/3 tank of 65 degree water.....

If you mean you are using unheated water from the tap, then you are probably using water that is around 56-57 degrees. For a 180 gallon tank operating at 77 degrees, a 20 gallon change will cause a 2 degree drop. A 45 gallon change would cause a 4 degree change.

I don't really know what amount of change is required to cause illness in fish, but those changes would be reasonable in an environment where there is runoff from heavy rains. I'd expect 10 degree drops to be quite different however, and for that you'd need to be doing 50% changes.
