Guys, i might be able to get a few of these fish in a couple of days. But before i do, i want to know what im up to. Ive tried the web but not much of any use appears for this species.
I hope you guys can help me a bit:
How is agression with these fish? I read they are very agressive (more than micros), is this true? Are they suitable for a comm. tank? They will come in at around 20cm. will they be able to live with my aro (22cm) and ornates (22cm)??
How about this cold season. Ive read somewhere that they need a colder period in the tank. Is this true? Will they adapt to a full warm year in my tank?
Are they picky eaters or will they accept mussel/shrimp/worm with ease?
And finally, would one be good or is a couple or treesome better?

A lot of questions again but at least that should give me the insight i need before i decide on getting a few.

Thanks in advance!

Hi there StiffMeister,

Channa aurantimaculata is a beautiful species of snakehead. I have two my self. When i got my original two one of them was very aggressive towards the other. Constantly trying to attack. So i seperated them. One was in a tank with a channa stewartii a bunch of clown loaches and a dat. That one was smaller than the stewartii and dat but bigger than the loaches. had no problem with aggression. The other one was housed with a senegal bichir and again no aggression issues. However the original two i got both died (one jumped out, the other had some kind of bacterial infection). Now i have two new ones both in the same setup as the previous two. One was given to me by a friend and his body is proper messed up. The other one i bought. Even though i have had aggression issues with my auranti's i've seen tanks where two were housed together. So i think it depends on the individuals personality.

They're not really picky eaters at all. All of mine have either started eating right away from the moment they are put in the tank. Or i've had to wait a couple of days before they started. I'm feeding mine muscles FD shrimp, frozen shrimp, bloodworms, ghost shrimp, feeder minnows, squid, clams.

I think it was stotty that was telling me that they need a hibernation period. Where the temp should get around 22 degres celcius but don't quote me on that. I will try with the two i have.

Sounds good! Thanks for the info.

yup, thanks for the info!
any other experiences or suggestions?

there is just 2 things that worry me: my young black aro and that hibernation period (which i cant do cuz of the other fish).

thinking about it... i can also put them in my other tank. In there is nothing they can eat but quite some current. do they like this or do they prefer slow moving water?
A friend of mine has a C. pleuropthalma which gets quite jealous when other fish eat and he chases the others around, even tho they are bigger than him. Can i expect this with auranti's?? Cuz in the other tank i have 2 eels and they are very tame now, something i wish not to ruin by adding a fish that will be very dominant.

it all depends on the individuals fish's personality. The ones i have now have no problem with chasing tank mates. Unless of course its another auranti. I wouldn't worry about the hibernation period too much.

Do you have any problems with them not liking water changes? I know some mates who keep pleuro's needed to cut down on waterchanges because there pleuro's freaked out each time.
