I'm just starting up a 530 Liter (roughly 140gall) and I'm planning on getting 4-6 channa bleheris... How many would you recommend?

Would it be possible with tankmates? possibly the Macropodus Opercularis? The snakehead is the one i want, the otherone is optional, and if you vote it out, then it's out :)

I'm planning on doing a lower temperature during wintermonth, and both fish will do well with that as far as I have read.

Help out a newbie in the snakeheadworld :D

I've been keeping them with my channa sp. assam. So far so good.
If you intend to breed the channa, maybe do 6 or more.
Both of your species are bubble nesters. I'm not sure if they'll compete for space at the surface during breeding season, but I'd keep a close eye on them.

Hi,

normally I am one of the guys that does not recommend snakehead community tanks,.....

BUT a 500 Liter tank should be possible with bleheri and obercularis. Both species like very highly planted/structured tanks, and in a tank that big it should be possible to keep both species when it is decorated the right way.

Cheers to our northern neighbours in Denmark

First of all: THX for replying :-)

I've been reading loads and loads about the various snakeheads over the last couple of weeks, and it's about 50/50 about wether or not to have tankmates...

I'm still not done decorating and the buying of fish is still a month away or so, so i've got plenty of time to think.

Meanwhile, please do let all the knowledge and wisdom of you handsome people flow (was that enough kissing a.. or do i keep it up?)

keep it up m8, keep it up ;-)

in fact a tank that sized I would prefer another snakhead and another company.
I would try P. obscura with some big Ctenopoma (kingsleye or other large growing Cts)

A nice african tank

That looks nice aswell, but i'm more keen on keeping a small species, i like the fact that they have planty of room to move around in, i tell myself that it gives the fish more natural behaviour which again will please me more to look at :-)

Any dwarf-species recoomendations?

By the way, you do look very nice today, is that a new shirt? ;)

there are news in the case of the newbie-snakehead-keeper :D

I've decided to keep it strictly channa bleheries, and just sent an email to a store that i know are selling them... it's a 150mile drive there but it will be worth the effort :-)
The next challenge is finding the cash for 6 of 'em :irked:

Whats the prize for one in Denmark ?

300kr, which roughly is abaout 50$ i think, but i just got a nice offer on some Assam Blue, around 80$ for 6 of 'em :headbang2

Any thoughts on the Assam blue VS Bleheri?

My tank is getting ready little by little, and soon will be ready :)

I put some red cherry shrimp in, just to add a little kleening crew, and to "welcome" the smakeheads when they arrive ;)

sp. Assam / lal cheng are a little more active than bleheri.
They are mouthbrooders, breeding is slightly easier than bleheri.
lal cheng were my first breeding succes in the snakehead world ;-)

in Germany i think normal shop price for bleheri is 20 Euro each, and sp. Assam the same.
Homrbred offspring is cheaper.
