Hello everybody rescued these two fish from a shop won't mention the name. They were sold to me as Channa pulchra but i think only one of them is and the other is ornatipinnis. They both look pretty stressed and its the first time ive every seen pulchra look so light coloured.Could all you Channa experts possible point me in the right direction.Thankyou Jay

Hi ,
you right they arent the same top one is an Ornate the the bottom one is Pulchra.
Pulchra will take on that lighter colouration when stressed (caught and moved) or when kept in a lighter enviroment like on sand.

thusly....

Hello mate, yes top ones deffo a ornatipinnis just like mine, if you look on the ornatipinnis you will notice the spots esp round the face larger than that one the pulchra...Good find, whats your tank set up like? when i got mine just before christmas they looked like yours, What i did was stick them into a unheated tank, did no waterchanges what so ever and feed them on dried meal worms, They healed up very quickly and fattened up nicely, repayed me with fry

Thanks for your reply, yea there in unheated tanks about 19c only trouble is just got 1 of each and there both adults so as channa go these 2 are probally dead ends as far as breeding goes but just couldn't help myself as both are lovely fish

well my plan wasnt in breeding<thats a major bonus.....
thanks mate......
Just watch them two as not sure how they go together as ornates are aggressive

Ive seperated them now, that was the reason I wanted to make sure they were different species.Would like to breed them but they are very picky fish when it comes to partners and since both of them now have established territories could be a right nightmare.Nigh on impossible to sex them too but got a funny feeling the ornate is a male seems to have a bigger head,a bit like lang cheng and bleheri
