Hello there everyone, I just wanted to introduce myself; I only have one monster fish (several fish but only one as a pet) my pet fish is an African Snakehead, we feed him live food, he is about 2 years old now and is approximately 13 inches. I've done a lot of research on him but am just curious to hear other peoples stories about their own Channa, he is truly a fascinating fish. He appears to recognize my boyfriend and I as he only puffs up when a stranger approaches and he gets excited when he sees the net we use to feed him. I'm curious as to how big he will get, how big his tank should be and any tips for tank set up (he likes to uproot plants)
Welcome to the site ! To answer your question at 13" obscura is into adult size, it might put on a couple more inches over the next few years bit growth will slow to a crawl. Tank wise 70g+ is fine for a solo fish, bigger is better. Heavily planted is also appreciated , but some species of snakehead like to dig and in those cases it's easiest to use anubias or java fern, things that can attach to wood or rock, that way he can dig until his hearts content and still have lot's of plants.
Where in Canada are u ? (if it's ontario or quebec dont answer this because of the bans and u never know who's watchin lol) I'm in NB, I also keep snakeheads I haven't kept Obscura , yet.
I'm a big fan of the subtropical species species from India . so far in the snakehead section of my collection I have 2x Aurantimaculata, 6x Bleheri, 2x Gachua and one solo Asiatica she's aggressive and ate her mate in the first breeding attempt lol.
Thanks for the info DC, I'm in NS so no ban here thank goodness He is definitely a digger, enjoys ramming into the rocks and burrying himself so plants have been trouble in his tank; often found floating at the top by morning. We plan on keeping him alone as he is very aggressive to anything that comes near his tank (except us for some reason, and one cat... the other cat he seems to dislike) I've noticed a lot of funny behaviours from him which is why I love this fish so much... he gets excited when one of us comes over to the tank and always comes out to say hello, when the tank we keep his dinner in is within his sight he will just stare at it; and if a tv is on he likes to stare at it as well. These fish seem to have a ton of personality for sure! He is our first monster fish, and the only fish we have right now.
