Hello all,

I got a group of Pleuros and would like to know what kind of waters they live in. Do they like fast/slow moving or still waters? Did try to get a read on this but unable to get any concrete answers. Would appreciate a lil help. Will try and get pics later.

Cheers,

There was a similar thread sometime ago with different answers/experiences reported.

If you look at their body structure when compared to other channas, they´re more elongated, specially the head with it´s torpedo shape, which indicates they are more "swimmers" than other channa species (like aurantimaculata, gachua, etc). Their behaviour, the way they attack food at high speed confirms it. So, I don´t think they come from still waters.

Based on that, I use some flow and try to adjust it based on their reaction as well as how it works in a planted tank (it´s not easy to keep the plants in place in fast moving waters)

So, in summary, I keep mine with low flow; others give them more agitated waters.

Thank for the reply JM.
I do have them in a good flow of water which is created by the powerhead of the top filter. This is their grow out tank and don't have much decor except for a driftwood, a pot and good bunch of Anubias with a barebottom.
The Auranti I had before just hated any movement in water. Unlike the Auranti these haven't reacted to the movement. But I still wanted some confirmation about their natural habitat.

Yes I did have a read on that. Didn't get an answer regarding my specific query though.

"Swimming in open rivers" immediately excludes still waters IMO.
So, it´s between slow and fast moving but I don´t know the answer to that.

They can be found in the rivers and lakes of Sumatra and Borneo. I gave mine pretty good flow when they were small, but now the tank they are in has pretty calm waters. They are not picky.

They are open water predators, as JM says.
I keep one big one and have a normal flow which does not seem to agravate or excite it.

I wouldmsay, in any case, that given the option they would prefer flow rather than still waters, as the " bulldog headed channas " seem to prefer.

My micros love their flow pump.

Thank you all for your inputs. I am more comfortable now to leave my powerhead on :)

Here are some clicks of them...
