I have a few questions... First I have a channel cat. How big can I expect him to get? Second thing is what are some good tank mates... Right now he is with Pleco and red parrot fish. I'm looking to add to my stock and just trying to get an idea.

Would a small mouth or other bass species do well? And if so how big does the bass get?

Welcome to MFK!

M: First I have a channel cat.
T: Are you sure? E.g., it is quite similar to a blue channel.

M: How big can I expect him to get?
T: about 1.5' 5lbs in the first year. 2' in 2 years. 3.5' in 10 years.

M: Second thing is what are some good tank mates... Right now he is with Pleco and red parrot fish. I'm looking to add to my stock and just trying to get an idea.
T: please read the datasheet on Planet Catfish: http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=6

M: Would a small mouth or other bass species do well?
T: you are mixing tropical and temperate water fish. Channel will do fine in tropical water. Cold/temperate-water basses may or may not.

M: And if so how big does the bass get?
T: the biggest species do not usually exceed ~1.5'.

blue channel cat is just normal channel cat the the LFS give them the name for easy to sell!
most channel cat grow to about 2.5 ft in captivity then slow down or stop growing.
basses are also cold water fish , not tropical! tropical fish will die when the water temperature drop under 50!
the biggest species of bass which is the striped bass get over 6ft in the wild and I haven't seen any pass 3.5 ft in aquarium!

I got a channel cat in a 90 gal. for now his only 7". His tank buddys are 2 angel fish, 1 oscar, 2 ice blue zebra cichlids, and a 4" pleco.
The cat LOVES to hide and only comes out when there is no noise or little light. You can give him what ever mates you want as long as he has his own place to hide.

T: here is my proof:

T: largely agreeable but captivity differs. 1 acre pond is captivity. So is 120 gal tank... Mine grew to 3' in 4 years in a 40'x6'x3'.

H: basses are also cold water fish , not tropical! tropical fish will die when the water temperature drop under 50!
T: agreed too but e.g. peacock bass is tropical and although it is a cichlid, the OP may not know it.

H: the biggest species of bass which is the striped bass get over 6ft in the wild and I haven't seen any pass 3.5 ft in aquarium!
T: I am rather positive the OP is talking about freshwater basses, having mentioned the small mouth... and the whole post is about freshwater.

Start doing a little research before buying.

on the red: then what did you pull the peacock bass here for? remember he ask about the basses that native to North America which are cold water fish! and there was a 3.5 ft striped bass in fresh water aquarium at the Cabela's near me which still bigger than the max size of the largest species of peacock bass(unfortunately he died for no reason after they move him from the 10000G tank to the 35000G tank)!
blue channel cat at all the LFS I've seen are normal channel cat! real blue channel cat is blue catfish which every LFS say they are illegal to get!

Thanks, Hung!

T: Hung, you may very well be entirely correct in that that was the OP's thinking and that the OP merely didn't state that clearly. You are right that the p-bass was a guessing game on my part because the OP said "any other kind of basses".

T: I don't doubt your numbers and knowledge. I doubt mine. I have no first hand experience with the stripped bass. I vaguely remember they are marine species, who are capable of spending some time in brackish and fresh water.

T: That's informative news to me. Thanks. I'll keep it in mind. I've bought blues before in the NE US. I've never been told and never seen any regulations existing with respect to the blue channels. I've never done it/been to Texas (I assume you are from). Perhaps things differ there.
