I just got my first Channel Cat and am hoping for some clarification from some experienced Channel Cat caretakers. I did do a considerable amount of research on Channels prior to making the purchase so I am definantly aware of what I got myself into. ;) My fella/gal is currently only 2" and in a 20g with more than adequate filtration. I cannot stress enough that his/her current tank is temporary quarters. He/She will be moved to a much larger home. Everything I've heard states that Channels are generally rather slow in growth though so I should have some time in the 20g. Regardless, he/she does have larger quarters lined up.

My questions are more regarding substrate selection and compatibility. The answers to both were answered my research but all references were quite vague...so...who better to ask then those who also have these monster cats? :)

Q. 1-> I currently have my channel in a tank with small grain gravel but I'm wanting to switch to sand. Would he/she do better on sand than gravel? My ideal coloration for sand would be natural. Would this pale the cat out or ,because it's a neutral tan, be just fine?

Q. 2-> What are some potential tankmates? I had Green Severums in mind as several sources stated that Channels are compatiable with any American Cichlid and Goldfish/Koi. If they aren't suitable, what would you suggest?

Channels may get large enough eventually to eat even large goldfish. I have kept them succesfully with other large catfish. The one I had I caught at 8 inches and within a year it was around 16 inches I kept him with a TSN, marble cat, fire eel, oscar, and several large black crappie. He schooled with the other cats and lounged with them during the day. Hope this helps, I had small gravel and it was neutral(brown) I could see him just fine.

I have a channel in my pond with a bunch of sunfish and goldfish.

It will grow quicker than you think:) My albino was 18" in about a year and a half.

Whatever wont bother them and wont fit in their mouth will be ok. They will eat smaller fish, and they like to harrass somtimes.

I had mine in with an arowana, chinese perch, oscar, vieja, clown knife, and a pleco.

They will do fine on either sand or rock, I had mine in a substrate of mixed sand and gravel

Made a trip to the lfs today...
I switched the tank over to sand. Not only does it look better but my channel cat is more active now as well. I also got a young Gold Severum and a young Green Severum. Nobody really answered my question about compatiablity between the cat and the severums. They appear to be getting along fine so far so I'm hopeful.
