What do juvenile channel cats look like? I bought a dinky little 1 inch catfish at a little goldfish shack today for $5. The guy sold it to me as a pimelodus pictus, but I can see the distinct barbel arrangement of fish in the Ictaluridae family.

It is slender and colored in a way I can't describe... It doesn't have the marbled pattern of a juvenile bullhead. So it must be some other kind of cat (I am leaning towards channel cat)

The guy there said that he didn't know where the catfish came from but if I wanted it, it was $5 so I bought it. I thought it was some kind of synodontis at first, but I saw the barbel arrangement was that of the North American cats (Ictaluridae)

I don't have pics right now because I can't find my DIY lens, but I'll take some later and share.

I've never seen a pictus that small, but I've never mistook a baby channel cat for something like a synodontus.

At 2 inches long or over baby channel cats usually are light silver with some black speckles and blackish/dark brownish tails and fins. 1 inch I dunno, that's really little.

Ok, here are the pics. I couldn't find my lens so I had to rely on the tele-macro. The pics are slightly blurry.

The first pic shows the barbel structure, and the last pic is a top view. The roll of tape in the corner is a roll of scotch tape that is almost gone (he's that small!)

his tail is forked so he is not a madtom and most likely not a bullhead.

White catfish (Ameiurus catus) perhaps?

I cannot tell you what it is Meepster. I can tell you with 100% certainty that it is not a channel.

The folks at Planet Catfish came through for me. It's a Pseudobagrus fulvidraco. It's a southeast asian catfish...

The barbels and the fin arrangement suggest that it's a native though...

Anyway, it's a cold water fish so I guess it fits in here :nilly:

It's rarely seen in the hobby.

Do you thinkit was sent here accidentally in place of another fish?

its coldwater so it might have hitchhiked with their koi or goldfish shipment. they import their koi and goldfish from china and japan
