I have a channel cat in my 150 gallon tank, they do grow fast but are very good with the fish I have it with. I have 2 Oscars, green severum, bluegill, pictus and columbian shark. the only thing is you need to provide it with it's own hiding space, when I remove the hiding space it stays in during the day, it becomes a little aggressive torward the pictus.

You should be able to keep it until it is about 16 inches. They can grow 1-2" per month. They can get to 4 feet long and will actually get to 2 feet in short order.

I don't know if you are thinking of the Blue Channel Cat, or just the regular Channel Cat. Regular Channel cats only get a little over 2 feet, where as the Blue Channel cats can exceed 4 feet. Below are profiles of both.

I was thinking of Ictalurus punctatus

Gets big, has no fear.

Your right, Ictalurus punctatus do get big and have no fear, mine can be quite aggressive and you need to watch out for fish that will fit in it's mouth. But, Ictalurus furcatus will get a lot bigger and would need a HUGE tank, also would have to worry about any fish it could fit in their mouth also.

As far as I know, a channel cat is a channel cat. All varietes grow 4ft. This includes the blues, blacks, and albino's.

There are different types of Channel cats, albinos can be a form any type, but there are two different kinds of channel cats. As I posted above there are the regular Channel cat, max size is a little over 2 feet, and then the Blue Channel cats, they have a max size of over 5 feet, this is very rare though, but it is possible. There are links below to both, you can see for yourself.

Ok, a few things. First PC is off by just a little bit on their sizes. The world record channel catfish was around 50" and weighed 58 lbs. Second, blue channel catfish is a missnomer. The only thing that could be considered a blue channel catfish is a hybrid of a blue catfish (you provided the link to), and a channel catfish. The hybrid has been around since the 1960s and is a common reason that many people call a normal colored channel catfish a blue channel catfish. Blue, or fulton catfish cat grow 5.5' to 6', and have been recorded this century over 150 lbs. The current rod and reel record is 121 lbs. The 150 lbs one was caught by commercial fishermen that's why it doesn't make the news more than the 121 lbs. one. Common channels, normal coloration or albino generally get 30" to 45" in the wild, and weigh roughly 20-40 lbs. There are also albino blue catfish. Just because they are albino doesn't mean that there is any difference in temperment or size potential. It's just a genetic mutation that shows up every now and then, but they are bred for albinoism for the aquarium trade. Hope this helps. Don't take the sizes given by planetcatfish too seriously. If you search fishbase, scotcat, and many others you will see they all have conflicting sizes. I get my sizes from actual specimens caught and recorded, not guesstiments. Johnptc's 3' channel catfish just died recently RIP

Are the albinos that are for sale at stores, wild caught or captive bred?

Is it possible to find a albino catfish in the US at a local lake? i know that they are much easier to spot and get hunted down but do they occur pretty often in the wild?
