Howdy,

new pick-up in quarantine tank, feeding on blackworms.

Anyone with positive ID? Could also be Charax pauciratus, or any of the Roeboides? R. thurni shares the same geographic distribution...

Thanks,
HarleyK

Not sure but I caught lots of Charax sp. in Uruguay.

Are they nippy with other fish or each other? What do they eat? Other experiences with them?

The Uruguayan ones, of course, are fine with cool water conditions...

Matt

Q-tank is full of Endlers, and they don't even touch the fry. Might be because the fry is at the surface and the Charax near the bottom of the tank.

Hard to say for sure but I'm leaning toward Gibbosus because they're one of the more commonly available of the three you mentioned and the body seems to be more elongate then Pauciradiatus which is more deep bodied then the fish you've got in my opinion. Though I'm no expert and the pics aren't real clear and they can be hard to differentiate, in either case nice pic up.

Thanks for the input, much obliged.

I guess I'll see in a few months' time. If I'm not mistaken, Charax get 2-3 times larger.

You think my pics are fuzzy??? Oh c'm on. The fish are so excited to be in my tanks that they don't want to hold still :-D

They are scale eaters. After I moved them out of quarantine and into my 220 gal tank, they started snacking on my angelfish... :swear:

That sucks!

Do hold on to them! We need some solid, empirical data for them in the hobby. Everyone just regurgitates the same stuff over and over but you're like the first person that I've seen who is actually attempting to keep them. These fish could potentially be good members of a mini-predator community for those who like ATF and payaras and the like but can't keep those species due to tank size requirements.
