I have a bunch of tanks with out hoods and looking at petsmart I can get, a whole package deal for the smae price or less than just a hood. So my question is are there any cheap good looking alternatives to cover the top.

Making it your own with just glass pieces for the top, sign board, or finding a used one would be cheap alternatives to buying a new hood..

cut a piece of wood or plastic to shape to cover it, and buy a hanging flourescant light hood from home depot ( i got one for $17 but there are some more fancy ones available)
then you either get the fish tubes to fit in, or you can modify it to take a smaller size.
this way you can have good looking affordable lighting, the lid is upto you what material you use :)

Try egg crates also called light diffuser. Also available at HD. Good luck.

No problem Jpac glad to help, I just did this with my set up to save money, they charge $100+ for them in the LFS so I saved a lot ;) and so will you, especiially if you already have the light tubes, just get the right sized fixture!
