I need to fill 8 liters of filter with biological filter media. How can I do this VERY cheap. Thanks!

I recently purchaced a Fluval FX6 and of course wanted the best bio filter to go with it. I have done a great deal reasearch on which bio media would have the most amount of surface covrage per volume. I initially decided on SeaChem's Matrix being made of micro tubules it seemed to have the most amount of surface area per volume being made of microtubules that water could flow through. Unfortunately my crude observations are showing othewrise. I believe the biofilm cloggs the the tubules leaving no more than a volcanic like rock. I believe smaller spheres or Fluval rings to be much more reliable.
