Fresh meadows - Queens, NY
My 55 gallon A. Cichlid has an Aqueon quietflow 55 as the filter.

I am looking for a way to improve its biological filtration. Currently it has 3 Aquaclear 70 sponges with the plastic shields that come with the filter. I have been looking at the Aquaclear or fluval bio rings/max. I have found the largest of both for $8-10. Does anyone know of places I can find them for cheaper, get more for my money, or better alternatives?

I would be replacing one of the sponges for the biological media.

AquaClear BioMax 110 - $8.99
Fluval Biomax Bio Rings 500G - $10.05

Thanks

Lava rock/stone for BBQ's, usually 4-5$ for a big bag

Lava rocks sound like something that would possible break the plastic container for my filter. I know water weighs around 8lbs in the filter. I would be worried about concentrated weight on one side of the filter.

Are they also that much better than bio-max/rings?

pot scrubbies

How do pot scrubbies differ from the AquaClear sponges?

Thanks both of you for the quick responses!

they are cheaper you can go to the dollar store and get like 5 packs of pot scrubbies for less than $5

Oh ok. I already have the sponges in my filter. They take up all the room in the filter, with out stopping the water flow.

Just an idea....keep that filter as is. maybe, add another hang on back, used of course, and fill it with bio media. It should take 3 to 4 weeks to seed. You dont have to add all once either. If it's a money factor, add your media when you can. I just added so much that I pretty much filled one of my two canister filters with seachem matrix media.
