my wife called me at work monday and asked why there was water coming out from under my fish tank....of course i said "its supposed to, dont you know fish tanks are supposed to leak?"...she didnt like that...i had her open the cabinet and take a look..one of the canisters was leaking..i had her turn it off and close the valves....i inspected it when i got home and it had a small crack on the return side soooo i went to my LFS got an over flow box(which i had been putting off) and setup my sump, only problem is my pump is to strong for the overflow box i got so i gotta restrict the flow alot so i guess im gonna pick up another overflow box today to make it all good....anyway, dont buy cheap no name crap off ebay and excpect it to last very long...those canisters are less than a year old.

I had too much pumping power for my overflows, too. My solution was to put a T in the return then a ball valve going back to the tank. The T goes back thru an old Marineland 350 with the propeller pulled using the micron filter. Another option would be UV, nitrate scrubber, or fry tank. Sorry to hear about your leak, but now that you have a sump set up, you're going to love it (and wet floors are going to be a thing of the past - haha).

I just placed an order for a Marineland C-220 for my 37g tank. The filter that came with the tank starter kit (a TopFin Power Filter 40) just seems cheap and I'm not confident in the bag-O-charcoal filter cartridge than comes with it.

As a canister filter which I intend to place in the cabinet/stand below the tank, I will be keeping it in a spare tall cooking pot that I don't use. Having heard stories such as yours about leaks on canister filters (apparently, some folks have O-ring issues with the MarineLand canisters), I want to be prepared.

It's amazing the tips and tricks I am finding on this site for all sorts of aquarium problems!

OP, specific brand and model of the cracked canister would help others better.

BSBB, most canister filters will eventually have problems with sealing rings from wear-n-tear, just like belts in your cars. But usually leaks would occur after a disassemble (for clean), so remember to check on them a day or two after the clean. Sumps are great, but not everyone can use them.

I have a couple ebay special canisters running at the moment with no dramas so far, one is about 3 years old. But they are a different brand and the top is held down by latches and not bolts

the return rate on those canister and the price were tempting to me but after an hour of research on google, i found that those canisters tend to crack/broken lid. You should have gotten those sunsun, greech, or aquatop canisters. No issues with mine what so whatever.
