In Your Imagination
So i am in the market for a cheap $500ish DSLR for taking general pictures as well as for taking pictures of fish. I have been looking at the Nikon d40 with 2 lenses for $560 but i was wondering what other ones are out there.

Other nikon bodies you could find in that price range with kit lens would be D50's and D70's. I've also see Canon XT's and XTI's for around that. (350D-400D).

any standard zoom lens included with the body would do the job (such as an 18-55mm) on D40's. but you'll get great results with a macro or micro. so look into other lenses.

Look into buying a speedlight (Flash) for the cam aswell.

Isn't think kind of like an oxymoron? If you are going to get a DSLR, you might as well put some money into it, because once you get it, your stuck with it till you sell it. Just save up a little extra!

Side note, get as many lens as you can afford. Or at least get one more than the stock one. Just fun being able to change the lens around. :) Remote flashes are great fun as well! :D

i was under the impression after i bought my first, that i'd be fine with the kit lens and i wouldn't want anything else, HA! boy was i wrong. all of 30 mins ago i bought a teleconverter and another lens (over $500 together). it adds up after awhile...

I'm getting one tomorrow any advice would be sweet i'm not up to date what camera takes the best pictures price dont matter much i went to best buy tonight and so many to choose from please help you can pm me or post it up no matter to me thanks

For that price range, i would recommend a Canon XT. You can get it now for around that range i think. Get a great lens with the money that you saved and then upgrade the body later.

the d40 comes with an 18-55mm and a 55-200mm lens for $560. Should i go with it?

If you ever want to go with a really fast or long lens then I wouldn't . I imagine those lenses are both f5.6 which is alright for normal conditions, but make shooting in low light a bit tougher. I love nikon, and all of their stuff is great, but I don't really like what they did with the 40s and 60s. Aftermarket lenses don't exist and the nikon/nikor lenses for them are just too damned expensive. They've changed from what they have been for what seems like forever.

If you go with Nikon, invest in the Lenses, they have a 5 yr warranty.
Get a cheeper body, because the bodies are being constantly upgraded and have a shorter warranty.
