so was searching around on line one night and came across this idea.... if you have any powerheads laying around ya don't use some floss and a bottle of pop (empty) your set ..... seems maxi jet powerheads work the best for this as the prefilter cage fits snuggly in the bottle end....anyway take your empty bottle of pop 500-710mm and cut the bottom off it...then cut some floss and roll it up and shove it inside the bottle, then take the bottle filled with floss and shove it on the prefilter cage of your power head.....and that's it ! so your getting nice crytal clear water and still getting the use of the powerhead :) iam sure you can paint the bottle to match the tank or even hide it behind some rocks or something like that

A picture is worth a thousand words. It sounds like you were browsing uarujoey's DIY Channel

I've done this before here's mine. It's similar just I used an air pump. There is another right next to the big one running on a power head.

Either I think prolly another canister with sponge and floss would do just as good and not look so ugly in the tank lol.... I have 2 in my 150 atm and it seems to help but only been on for like a few hrs yet.... And cosmectically it looks terrible imo lol

Aquaclear quick filter powerhead attachments work even better, since they won't clog. The filter pads are reusable, durable, and easy to clean. I have about 12 of them. They're cheap and polish the water better than filter floss also.

Any release of chemicals from the plastic water bottle sitting in your tank for an extended period of time?

Not that I know of I had those in my tank for months till I bought better filters
