Anybody know where I can find a good external pump that pumps around 250 to 500 gph, thats cheap, and that doesn't need to be primed?

sorry I don't have an answer to your question, but I want to advise by this saying, "buy cheap, buy often." While there are probably some good pumps out there, I wouldn't go for the cheapest, especially since you are talking about gallons of water that could end up on your floor if your inexpensive pump fails.
as a general rule, external pumps need to be primed.
as a general rule, self primers are not cheap.
remember self-prime pumps need to be able to pump air over the force of gravity on water.
most external pumps use gravity & siphon as an advantage, the pumping of water is just over the edge of the tank.

I'm going to try this one http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=45014 next week. It says for fountains & waterfalls so may be continuous duty ?!
They have a more powerful one that's even cheaper $19.95, but doesn't say F/W or indicate C/D.
