Since I cant afford expensive lighting, what are your opinions on Flora-Glo or Flora Sun Bulbs? It says they emit emmisions for optimum plant growth. I will only be using floating plants like anacharis and milfoil, so I dont think high intensity lighting will be neccessary because the plants will be so close to the lighting. There will be 2 40 watt bulbs in a 125 gallon tank. What do you think? Thanks in advance!

for just floating plants yes they will work fine

Howdy,

It greatly depends on what floating plants you want to keep. Water lettuce is very light demanding and will probably not flourish. Duckweed, however, grows under any conditions...

if your low on $$$ just buy some 6500k t8's from lowes or home depot 2 pack for $7
and they work better IMO
the money you save on blubs use to buy a ARO VHO ballast 220 watts

What is the optimum "k" rating for plants? Also what does the t mean?

K is kelvin. kelvin measures to things. one its a temperature scale, its 273* warmer then the temp in Celcius, and two it measures the color temperature of light. at different color temps there are different waves of the spectrum. at lower kelvins there is more red, in the middle is kinda whiteish blue and at the end is blueish purple. the ideal rating for plants is somewhere between 5000 and 10000K. this area has the greatest amount of useble light for the plants and also helps make the tank look good.

T12 , T8 , T5
just different types of bulbs 12 and 8's are usually interchangeable
T12 1.5" 40watt for 48" bulb
T8 1" 32watt
T8's use less energy and produce more lumens

i was using agro sun bulbs in a reg hope dopey fixture for a while. i do indoor gardening and have delt with alot of bulbs they are the best imo 6700K rating. and are brighter than most others.

Thank you, you all have given me a lot of useful info, so now all I have to do is go buy some lights! I think Im going to go go w/ the Coralife Nutri Grow Plant Lamps, what do you think? They are only about $11 for the size I need
