i'm looking into building a new, bigger, stronger, faster.... okay maybe just bigger tank. But i'm trying to get an idea of how much the tank and hood would be to build. I'm looking for cost of materials mainly... i will price the filters and such myself. but please share your project experiences (mainly looking for price and materials used) thanks!

well, since i'm living in an apartment, i probably shouldnt bother building a plywood for now. i do have a friend that may want to build a tank with me and put it in his house. i most likely would only be able to fit a 120. but for the sake of discussion, lets say a 300 gal

check out craigslist for local building and tracotr supplies who give away 3/4-1" sheets of plywood for pennies on the dollar... and then you will need to spend some real money on glass and sealant... then your going to nickle and dime out on little things like Paint rollers, screws, a drill, sand paper, stain, extar wood for your screwup cuts ect. ect. ect.... But you could probable build one with decent filtration for less than $1200.... IMO please dont murder me guys.... I havent built one... But juust doing some looking and calculating thats what i have come up with...

if i was going to spend that much, i could buy a beast of a setup on ebay or craigslist. thanks for the info though!

yeah... but it would be yours.... it would be something no one has... And 1200 with filtration on a 300gal is pretty good... But i understand what your saying...

1200 bucks is something i dont have though, as much as i would love a 300 :(

It varies WIDELY. You can be frugal, you can abandon ship on things like nice trim, and spend time instead of money making mediocre materials nice instead of buying nice materials. I spent about $1500 building my 200 by the time lights, filters, heat, glass, screws blah blah blah blah blah was done. But I also used new glass, epoxy, oak, and so on. My 600gal build has only cost me about $400 so far, and it's nearly done. I used recycled glass, plywood, and polyester (fiberglass) resin. See link in my signature. It's taken more time to make it look nice, but it was a lot cheaper.
