Always check before you buy any fish at the sides top and the bottom.

Just bought an RTC and i just look at it and seems alright so i bought it. but when i brought it home, i noticed he/she had Curled gill on its left, so i tried my best to cut it and try my luck. though i dun have any experience in it.

Why did you try and cut it. Did seeing it that way bother you that much.

How about Research before you purchase any fishes?

An RTC will not fit in a 6' tank for life, period

I typically will observe fish a good 5-10 mins before I decide to buy. I really look at it, as closely as possible and that makes a big difference. Now if my gut says don't buy I listen.

To the "get a bigger tank" guy, you guys crack me up. Over-Stocked is such a relative term and contrary to popular belief, it's not all black and white. It's not over-stocked until the fish are of a certain size. A one inch fish for example does not need to go into a 75 gallon tank anytime soon. Many fish don't get large until a couple of years and even that is different for each fish owner. In stead of saying get a bigger tank or doing the fish pita cruelty blah blah, just tell them at some point in the future, you may want to upgrade to a bigger tank. Better yet put it on your signature that way you don't ever have to repeat the mantra.

I once had close to 25 fish in a 10 gallon tank and they all did great and water conditions were always normal meaning 0 Ammonia 0 Nitrtes and very low Nitrates. Overstocking should not be looked down upon, there are many great over-stocked tanks. Some in the hobby actually prefer an over-stocked tank, me being one of them. Besides, the one inch per fish rule is flawed and out-dated.

I fully agree with you Plecostic. . .Not everyone has the means at that moment in time to buy the biggest tank out there for a RTC that is only 3" anyway. Yes we all know that the fish will at some point outgrow the tank, we all know when it starts bumping into decorations and has difficulty turning around in the tank, that it has out grown the tank. That is when we will buy a bigger tank, or put it into our heated ponds or sell it. No need to tackle someone about it and degrade the guy. Although you do get a guy with an Arowana in a goldfish bowl every now and then. . .that guy can be given a stern talk. Not the guy with a 3" RTC in a 110Gallon tank.
