Months and months ago, I brought home a scraggly, thin lapradei (our first) from the LFS. She was only 8'' long, and when we put her in the tank, she was promptly mauled by a big buettekoferi with a bad attitude. I stuck her in a hospital tank to wait it out while her eyeball healed (it was almost removed) and her wounds fixed themselves. After the buettekoferi was gone, we moved her back into the 55, and she disappeared into her little rock cave (in the thread I have with the pics of all my fish, she's the lap who didn't come out for her picture). I didn't see her for months - she left her head outside to eat but never came out... I swear I haven't seen her since May or June. Now look... I'm SO amazed...

Miss Lucy, about 14'' now

Takes great pictures huh??

if your not totally in love with the black sand, add a bag of a lighter color sand. all your polys seem dark and patternless to me (laps dont have pronounced patterns, i know). they would lighten up and show their true colors if you used a lighter sand. Awesome fish BTW!!!!!!!!

She was forced to. I stole her cave in the tank she was in, and then I had to move a big congicus in there and they dont get along so I had to move her. Now I get to see her all the time :)

yeah black substrate can do that to bichirs, which is why i don't really like it either...many guinea laps actually have amazing patterns, when they show. and red substrate will bring out the patterns of almost any laps, guinea variant or regular laps.

btw, keeper of the ropes, thats a great looking lap. looks like a guinea lap. is that right?

Yes she is. :) Not quite my favorite fish, but definitely in the top 5 now.

The only sand substrate I have access to at all the LFS is black sand :( I've got to go hunting for silversides this weekend so I'll hit them all again just incase I overlooked some. Will have pix of the congicus (better ones than the other on the all my bichirs thread) in about a month - moved her to a tank she won't jump in and started treatment with Melafix for her torn-to-hell mouth.

Very nice lapradei, KOTR! Congrats!

I know exactly how you feel... same thing happened to me... not hiding, but activity-wise. My lapradei hardly came to the top to feed, but now she comes up to the top to take pellets, right along the side of her endli companions! Ever since she began doing this... she's become one of my favorite polys now! Enjoy! :)

Very sweet fish, glad it turned out well.

very nice lap.....cool story and im glad its looking nice and plump for you now.
