I started a Wtb ad on craigslist which stated the following
Any fish tank filter that is 75 gallons or up! Canister filters, hang on back filters and ill even interested in some pumps that are 900gph +. Just email me with what you have and the price you would like for it. Thanks for looking. I can drive for a good deal, local is always better though!
Within a couple of hours a nice guy replied to my add and long story short i got the following for 25 bucks.
2 aquaclear 110's
1 aquaclear 70
1 marineland penguin 35
The aquaclears do have some chips on the lids and one impeller on the 110 only has two blades but is still functional. The guy said he needed to lower the flow due to it ripping out all his plants in his tank. But impellers are 12 bucks so i could care less.
A quick note... Dont even bother replying to the people trying to get back 90% of what they spent. Craiglist is plagued with people who want crazy amounts of money for something that is worth 1/4th of the asking value. A good rule of thumb is 2.5 dollars MAX per gallon for the WHOLE set up including, tank, stand, filters, decoration, pumps, chemicals, etc. And if its damaged go lower.
Here are some prices I find is "fair",
Tanks = a dollar a gallon for 75 gallons or up for a "good large tank" with or without stand. (A diy stand is cheap and nice tanks are becoming more rare).
Aquaclears
70 = $20
110 = $40
Fluval filters
206 = $45
305 = $70
406 = $80
fx5 = $100 - $125
Eheim (I avoid eheims, reason is in the pro 3's)
classics = Decent filters just add about 10 or 15 dollars to the price of the fluvals.
pro series 3 = dont even bother. (pre august 2010 leak and manufacture will ignore you even if you have warranty)
Your area may differ with prices but hope this gives a vague idea of what you should pay for the item, I'm a little "cheap" as filters are abundant in my area so and I can afford to wait for a better deal.
