check valve installed wrong

ok the simpliest thing and i put it on the hose backwards(reverse) than it was supposed to. i had it on the aerator for over a week this way. did i ruin it. i did turn it around now, but should i trash it. it does say you need to replace them yearly. why is that? anyone/ thanks

If the check valve was installed backwards and air was flowing through it the check valve is not working, it is supposed to keep air/water from flowing in the reverse direction. Trash it.
