Out Back In The Woods!
Do you really need Chemical Filtration in your Filtration System??? Such as Chemi-Pure, Nitra-zorb, Ammonia Chips??? Isnt your biological System suppose to take care of those? Just askin cause i was told the more BB the better and that Chemical Filtration Is a waste of time and money... Bought a 40oz bottle of Chemi-Pure for my DIY Filter But would Like to add more BB Media But if i do the lid will not close w/ the Chemical Filtraion on top of the BB Media... What Should I do??? Cut out the Chemical Filtraion and add more BB Filtration Media or Split the difference of both medias... The tanks is going to house 6 Catfish till the grow out to a decent size then move to a bigger tank...

If I Split the Differnce between the 2 Media I would have More Chemical than the BB Media Not sure what to do??? Leanin more toward the BB Media Increasing...

On a well established and maintained tank the chem media shouldn't be needed. Carbon can be useful to help remove tannins and medications from the water, but most of the other options are bandaids that take care of a problem but don't address the cause. Your best option is to use as much bio media as you can fit which would result in 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite anyways.

I would just get rid of the chemical filtration and go with all bio and test the water regularly. If the levels get messed up then maybe try the chemical, but it should be just fine with only bio.

Thats what i was thinking and leaning toward... in the DIY Filter If i put 2 More Layers of Jap Matt on top of the Bio Media wont the Jap Mat also become a Bio Media ??? Also Hence isnt that why everybody says you should use an established tank filter sponge when tryin to cycle a new tank correct????? If the Jap Mat turn into Bio Media that would make quite a bit of bio media..

Yeah, pretty much anything will eventually become bio media. I'm sure some things are better that others, specifically something that has a lot of surface area, which is why all the rings and balls are good. I'd say put as much bio in it as you can fit with a little mechanical like the mat. Maybe put a little poly fill or something over the bio media for the finer particles.

Yeah, all you really need in a filter is bio meadia - to process waste, and mechanical media - to keep bio media working efficiently.

I got 2 layers Of Jap Mat for Mechincal Filtration then Bio-Media then another 2 layers of Jap Mat for xtra Filtraion and will Eventually turn to Bio Media as stated above in previous post... I had the same idea and you confirmed it...

Sounds good. I would probably have the bio last in the equation though, after the mat. It would probably be ideal to use the mat initially as a pre-filter, then some poly fill, then the bio. I just recently starting using poly fill and its just like polishing pads, only cheaper. Bio's the most important part though so as long as you're going that direction soon then it's all good :)

So in other words I should Have 2 Layers of Jap Matt For Mech Filtration then a Poly Fill Mat For Finer Filtraion then the BIO-Media the rest of the way to the top of the lid? So dont put any Filter over the BIO-Media? When u say say poly Fill U mean like the arts and craft stuff correct? I purchase a Square Poly Fill Densified Pad from walmart 2" thick from the arts and craft section will this work after the Jap Mats?? only reason i bought it was it was a pad and looks better in the Filter...
