I need you experts' opinions here.... :D

Can you successfully sustain a healthy freshwater aquarium that is completely chemical free?!?!?
Is this even a good idea or is it bad??? If good, how would you recommend going about doing so???

(my brother-in-law was told just fill it and dump 'em in, no chemicals at all, no waiting for cycle. I always thought this to be bad)

I would think a lot depends on the water source. My water has chloramines added to it. After 24 hours or so, the chlorine evaporates out leaving ammonia. Can't have healthy fish swimming in ammonia.

Yes it is possible, I am one example. I have well water, really good well water. I just drain and fill em, it's great. I don't use any chemical filter media either, all bio filtration. So yeah, it's possible but you would need an uncontaminated water source

As far as aging the clorine will evapoate out of the water in about 24 when exposed to the air. I have been doing research into doing a constant drip system and thus not having to do water changes. Dripping a gallon or 2 per hour into a 1200 gal system will keep my water at a constant without using chemicals. Once again, as mentioned before, the water source is paramount to the entire equation.

No, the chlorine will evaporate, but If the water contains chloramine you will be left with ammonia, you really need to know what the specific water source contains

Hello; I have been keeping aquarium change water in containers for a few days for three plus decades. My tap water has only chlorine that will dissipate by simply sitting. I do not use bubblers or any thing, just allow the water to sit a few days. Some have suggested up to four days. I got in the habit of refilling my containers the same day as I do a water change so they usually sit up to a week. I now have enough containers to do two complete water changes. During warm weather I keep foam plugs in the necks of the containers to keep mosquitoes out as i sometimes have had them hatch out of the containers. Anything that allows air circulation will do.
I had a place with a well for several years and could add water directly. That was nice.
As previously stated by others some water companies use other treatment chemicals, chloramines for example, that do not become inert with sitting. Contact your water company, they will have the information and should have a water quality report you can pick up.
Good luck.

Here is an easy answer. If the water has chlorine only, then yes, aging it will work fine. If the water contains chloramine, aging will not be adequate
