IN A PLACE
Hi,
I keep discus, columbian tetras, giant plecs, and koi angels.
I am expanding my sump to accommodate more filtration for my 175g. The tank houses a discus community as well as large plecs.
Currently, it is a dual tower wet/dry with a commercial bio-wheel and uv sterilizer. For chemical filtration, I have a cocktail of sorts sitting in the sump. I placed one bag of chemi-pure, bio-zorb, and PURA complete before the pump.
I am adding a fluidized bed filter and a Kent Phos reactor. The reactor will serve as the chemical media portion of the system. After reading about the various chemical media, I was thinking about changing from what I currently have.

Was thinking about using one of the following:
Purigen
Renew
High-grade carbon

Or should I continue using the bags and just put them in the reactor? Will that work or will I have to take the media out of the bag in order for it to be suspended?

Thanks

Why in the world do you feel you need to use all this stuff? With sufficient amounts of mechanical and bio, and decent water changes, there should never be any need to use all the chemical stuff, especially with discus. :grinno:

take away the chemical...and add more bio and mech...Your fish and your pocket book will thank you and their conditions will be more stable.

this is why i am adding the FBF--added bio. All of the driftwood in the tank (despite boiling and soaking) still leaches tanins into the water, making the water look yellow despite water changes. The chemical media removes the tanins.

Chemical media and discus is a good idea, so long as you keep up with maintaining the chemical medias. Purigen works very well. The reason to use this, is to keep the nitrogen levels as low as possible. The water changes are still going to be the same, but with chemical medias such as Purigen, you will be able to keep healthier discus, which will have an easier time growing to their full potential.

Thanks Wyldfya! It's not as if I am neglecting the tank, I change the water weekly. Even with a 100gpd RODI unit, it takes a long time to produce enough water for more frequent water changes on a 175g aquarium. The chemical media is simply a supplement to the filtration.
