It's actually highly advised to not use any type of carbon in a planted tank because it will absorb nutrients from the water column that the plants need to thrive in a closed circuit aquarium.

Myself and some others have had this discussion at another forum theplantedtank. The final discussion ended with fact proving that carbon does not absorb the nutrients from the water that a planted tank needs. Carbon does not absorb nitrate, phosphate or potassium. It also does not have a great effect on micro nutrients as well. Its a false and not proven that it does.

Should and want to are 2 different things. Looking at chemipure I see no reason that it would hurt or be necessary. I personally dont run any forms of chemical filtration in any of my tanks but occasionally the hospital tank ive got. But I can tell you running it wont hurt anything.
