Oxymoron. Nice areas and chicago do not go together

I've never been to Chi town but just about any large city has its more desirable areas....even Filthydelphia,as you like to call it.

Right but seeing as how I'm in az I figured I'd ask some people in the area before I spend the cash to fly out and wander aimlessly, I need something to start with.

It takes me 44 minutes to get downtown from northwest Indiana and I can get 15-20 minutes closer while staying in Indiana. I work with a couple of guys from the northwestside and it takes them 35 minutes to get downtown. We do not have the public transit options that Chicago has but a 15 minute drive will get you to train stations going into the city. You will find many homes in safe quite neighborhoods that meet your criteria for cost, I regularly leave my cars unlocked occasionally with window down and keys in the ignition. In Illinois a $250k home will run about $8k in property taxes but only $2-4k in Indiana, on top of that we have have cheaper sales and income taxes.

Outside of safety and cost what else is important to you? Do you want a walking environment, nightlife, public transit? If your main focus is value and safety northwest Indiana is the place to be. One lasts thing, it was 70 degrees today.

Sorry I got distracted and didn't finish.

I live in Schererville, other towns to look into are Munster, Dyer, and Highland. In my neighborhood you can get a 2 bed, 2 bath, 2 car garage paired home with 45'x45' backyard ( bigger than most city yards) in the $150-165 range, a comparable condo with a single parking space and no yard will run $200k-$250 depending on the neighborhood. For $250k you can get a nice single family home. Highland has safe clean areas with older homes where $160k will get you a 1, 500sq ft single family home

I'm in the NW suburbs, lake in the hills to be exact. Its roughly a 45 minute drive into the city in non rush hour traffic. During rush hour it can easily take an hour and a half to get down town.

Wife and I bought our house for $150k back in October. Its 2100 SF, 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath, pretty small yard. It was a foreclosure, so that did help the price, we've had to do a lot of work on it. Oh, property taxes are around $5500 a year, after we went through the process of having them reduced.

Other houses in my neighborhood are selling for around $220k for similar floor plans now, however they are all in great shape.

The next town over does have the metra into the city, its an hour and 10 minute ride in. Going closer to the city it does get more expensive at first. Down the metra line you will pass through Cary and fox river grove, nice towns, similar to the one I live in, then Barrington, very wealthy community, huge, very expensive houses. Next is Palatine, nice in some areas, not so nice in others, tends to be very expensive.

I've found the further from the city you go, the more house you can get for the money (for the most part). I don't know much about the west or south burbs, but if there's an area you are looking at feel free to ask, I may know a bit more about certain cities. Hope that helps a bit
