A buddy of mine has a comercial grade chiller that runs on 120v and I'm thinking of getting it and setting up a 70 Gallon cold water reef tank. He doesnt know the specs on the chiller, because it was his moms. But he says it's about 3' x 3'. This seems big to me, but you think it would be way overkill? Or are most chillers pretty large? Is there such a thing as having too big of a Chiller?

They have a thermostat built in to regulate the temperature. Bigger could be better, don't know how your summers are but if something happened to the AC, you would be in trouble.

Since I'm pretty close to the water, our Summers are very mild, rarely getting in the 80's. My house doesn't even have AC. And thats the norm in the Bay Area. So the house usually stays around 70's in the day and then the heater kicks in at night, yes even in the summers :) But does a 3' square chiller seem really really big, or are they pretty big normally?

If the chiller ever failed, I can always take the fish out and put them in my live well on my boat in the bay. Our bay/ocean temps are 55-50 degrees. I'm actually thinking of getting some local fish for the tank.

The chiller should never fail, you may want to run a heater in the tank as well because depending on the temp you want to run, you may need both of them.

chillers are pretty large, because of the refergerant components.

you are very lucky to have the means to set up a cold water tank, being the chiller and the bay. check out reefcentral.com and search out the cold water setups. they are amazing, native and there is a fellow in Tazmania that has one, his backyard has fish that often look better than the tropical reef fish.
