Since these distant relatives of sharks and rays are rarely encountered and poorly understood, they’re known by several false names, including ghost shark and rat-tail.

Perhaps it’s good that these fish are rarely encountered, too, because a highly venomous spine can be found on their primary dorsal fin.

since it's got teeth and a venomous spine...i wonder what it diet consists of at that's depth. don't worry, i'll google it
 
I thought chimaera were those Mexican fireplaces for your patio.

I'm guessing the spines are more for defense and not used as a means to hunt food with

I thought it was particulary interesting to hear that only in New Zealand they use rat fish for their fish and chips...

I know back in th days sharks were used for Fish N Chips in Australia, and now makes me wonder if they also used rat fish?
