Chimney Pots vs. Water Quality

I want to use some small chimney pots in my tank. The inside of the pots are fire proof and contain some black stuff for fire protection.

Does anybody know if the fire proof black stuff will change my water quality???

Im currently soaking them in my pond (with my cheapy feeder goldfish) for 24hrs to see if it does anything to my fish.

the black stuff could leech into the water and hurt/kill teh fishes

ive heard that its actually only carbon to protect the inside pot lining???
