Chinese Freshwater Protein Skimmer?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Looks like an upsidedown powerhead with a plastic bottle top cut out into a funnel. If you keep it close to the surface it creats a suction or vortex which pulls down the protein film which then dissolves in the water. If you can get a T joint on your pump return outlet and stick something similar to that then it might work as well. Works something similar to a Lily pipe. Try youtube for ADA Lily pipe demo.

thanks. so it just dissolves the proteins and releases it back into the water? its not collected in a cup and removed like you would on a saltwater setup?

i think i understand how it works now. its pretty much a diy surface skimmer for tanks without overflows. the upside down powerhead pulls debris down from the surface and into the water so that a canister or hob filter can pick it up.

There is some physics problems with using a protein skimmer in freshwater
They dun function in brackish well either
Can't remember the math, but they need a minimum SG of like 1.012 to work

Not finding a distinction
It appears to be the same design

As far as I know they are the same thing. I haven't used either, so I can't tell you any more.

There is no distinction between the two, foam fractioning just doesn't work very well in a fresh water aquarium situation that's why you only see them really used in salt water and koi ponds where you would have a larger bio-load.
