Hi guys,

I was in Chicago's China town today and bought a sweet looking eel for sale in a grocery store. I guess it is a popular eel for the Chinese to eat. It seems to be maybe the "Japanese Eel" from what I learned on wikipedia. It is freshwater. Has anyone ever kept one of these? I would like to know what others have done to keep these guys and what to feed them.

Thanks for any help or comments!

If its a swamp eel, they eat anything. I feed my convicts that I breed for feeders, nightcrawlers, and shrimp. Every 6 months or so I will feed it a couple of large gold fish.

yes, He kind of looks like that, not as mottled on the face though. I put him in my 125 with cichlids and native fish. some of my cichlids are pretty small. He hasnt tried to eat them yet but should I get this guy out of there anyways? I tried giving him frozen shrimp but he refused it. I guess he just has to settle in more. Any other facts or observations about these fish anyone would like to share?

Whatever fish you want to keep, I would remove them. When I first got mine he ate a 3" goldfish. They are pretty much ambush predators, and my guy seems to prefer live food, I would try nightcrawlers. Also make sure you have a couple of places for them to hide. OH and make sure your tank is completely covered, these guys are supposed to be escape artists.

i see these guys at china town in a tank with low water levels and their head popping out
do they need to have low water levels or can i leave them in a fully aquatic setting
