A little write up, Neo-please supply more pictures with this! Others with knowledge are welcomed to add on, comments and pictures welcomed.
Siniperca chuatsii-aka Real Freshwater grouper, as this fish is the closest relative to the salt water groupers and much resembles the Panther grouper in salt water if someone can supply a comparison photo.
I've personally seen specimens over 18". There are over a dozen different species in this genus, with some vary bazaar ones. I've personally seen and kept 2 different species only. This group of fish would be one that I truely call it rare in the hobby, to my knowledge, besides the S. chuatsii, non of the other species have been kept by hobbiest in this country.
They can tolerate freezing temperatures, but from my personal experience, they can take temperatures up into the 80s with no difficulties. Caution: Just like their salt water counterparts, they can eat food the same size if not bigger than themselves, someone please post that picture of the 12" bumbble bee grouper eating the 12" lizard fish.
These fish being that they have salt water ancestry, they can also be kept with some brackish water fish. Their temperments are mild other than their appetite.
