Well I just picked up a 125g tank as seen here.

Anyway it leaked after putting just a gallon in it and letting it sit overnight, just a few drips but still. It looked as if it has been resealed at the bottom seam inside, who knows why. So I decided to have a hand at resealing it in hopes that would fix it. So after scraping the silicone away in the corner that leaked I found a small chip behind the silicone. It isn't very large or deep but still concerns me greatly. It's on the front pane at the bottom near the corner as seen in photos. Is it a complete loss here? Anyone had anything similar? The tank was built in Jan 94'.

I've thought of ideas and come up with the following.

1. Completely disassemble the tank and replace the front pane, somewhat cost prohibitive as well as time. Seems like a lot of work and money just to save a few bucks. By the time I got a new piece of glass and all that silicone I'd be around 1/2 way to the cost of a new one I think.

2. Just scrape it, clean it, reseal it and see what happens. Seems risky but in the end may be fine.

3. Scrape it and reseal it then add a second pane that sits on the bottom pane and silicone it in place. To cover the chip as well as any others I may find and to help the chip from having any load on it.

4. Scrape it and reseal it but place a small piece of glass over the area where the chip is. Then silicone around it and hope it will place much less load on the chipped area to prevent any accident from happening.

5. Scrape it and reseal it and resell it as a Reptile tank only since it would be fine for that and I could easily break even, at least I think so. I don't want to have to do this as I've wanted a 6ft tank forever but they aren't really in my budget with the insane prices they ask for them new or perfect condition used ones.

6. Go drag it in the backyard and smash it. :irked:

Anyway here is the chip, it isn't huge nor deep BUT it's also got 125g worth of water weigh pressing on it.

Well I got the rest of the tank scraped and that is the only chip I found. I think I am going to do option 4. Oh and new razor blades make a WORLD of difference when doing this job. A spray bottle with water to spray on the seal and a new blade and it came right up. I also got some alcohol and vinegar and it helps clean up. I need to go and do a fine scrape along all the edges to get any small bits I left on the first pass, actually I am going to do that a few times. Then acquire a small piece of glass to place over the chip before I reseal it with silicone, I am not sure what type yet.

I know it's no comparison but I've repaired complete cracks in glass panes on aquariums (30-75 G) by heating the silicone (you can find the stronger stuff for large capacity aquariums online pretty cheap) in hot tap water for a while so it's more ..er, liquidy. I mashed the silicone in and it penetrated well, let it dry 24 hrs, cut the excess back with the obligatory razor and then did a proper seal over it. It worked like a charm for me and cheaper than replacing the panel. On a 125 I'm sure it'd be a similar process but not having done it myself, I can't guarantee the results. Best of luck to you mate!

You can place a 1"-2" strip along the whole front and back of the tank. Like euro bracing. My 150gal is done like this and i chipped the bottom. Its still holding.

Looks like what you are removing was a badly done reseal attempt.Me I would just do a reseal and not worry. As long as you get the glass perfectly clean it will seal.

I think you are correct, I could see slightly different colors in some of the silicone as I peeled it away, some was bluish other bits were whitish. Thanks for the input I am feeling more hopeful now.

IMO, I think you should give up on this whole project and bring that tank over to my place.

I wouldn't worry about the chip. You could always give it a garage fill test before setting it up in the house.
