So I was just doing a google search and I happened to click on some article...and here's what I got out of it:

Sodium Thiophosphate(Na2S2O3) can be used to detoxify chlorine and chloramine. According to the article, Wardley's Chlorout and Mardel's MarChlor are made from plain sodium thiophosphate.

Could we just purchase sodium thiophosphate in bulk in crystal form and then dilute it, as a cheap alternative to water conditioner?

I think you mean [FONT=trebuchet ms,arial, helvetica]Sodium thiosulfate. And in this case, yes. But, make sure your ammounts are very specific or it can be just as toxic to your fish as chlorine.

Some of the fancier 'dechlorinators' also have agents in them that convert ammonia to ammonium, which is an asset when breaking the ammonia/chlorine bond of chloramines.

So while your suggestion would work, there are still assets to spending the couple of bucks on a quality dechlorinator. When considering the yearly expenses for aquarium upkeep, dechlorinator is a small drop in the bucket anyway, so there's no real reason to skrimp on it.
