how close are the 2. if my town uses chloramine in the water will anything show up on the test strips under chlorine? has anyone ever had a town not use either?

I believe if you test for total chlorine, chloramine would be included in that. If it's just free chlorine, it wouldn't be, but I'm not 100% sure

your right. just read that total chlorine is free chlorine and chloramine combined. my water is showing 0. i have city water so i thought one or the other would aways be present.

ive never heard of a town not using it..

i do not work for the water department...

Most large towns use it, chlorine is ten times easier to remove then chloramine as you can just use air bubbler, plus there is no ammonia release with just chlorine.

man i would pay extra each month for chlorine to be used instead chloramine.

The best way to find out is to call your local water treatment plant. They'll tell you what they use and you can ask about other chemicals they may add to your water. You can also ask for a nitrate reading, general hardness and carbonate hardness. They will even mial you their quarterly test results. I've actually gotten to be on a first name basis with the head chemist at our town treatment plant, he's a fish geek too.

You're close, chloramine is a chlorine molecule with an amine attached. An amine is an ammonia derivative. The attachment of the two molecules is a result of the polarity of the amine. This polarity allows the two molecules combine by hydrogen bonding.

Isnt amines the chemical group and ammonia one of them included in the group . . . so wouldnt ammonia be a derivative of an amine? Just out of curiosity since I did fail organic chem a couple of quarters ago LOL

It's been awhile, but I did ace my organic chem class.

An amine group is a polarized ammonia group. It's that polarization that attracts it to the free chlorine ions.

You were close but backwards, amines are derivative of ammonia.
