Bought some young chocs a couple of months ago. They were bought as coryphaenoides
but at 3-4inches the pics we're getting up on the internet have us thinking they may be temporalis. Also would anyone have a go at sexing them
100% temporalis.
Coph are really quite rare and they keep their black colouration their entire lives with an orange blaze along the top of their bodies.
the problem is these two fish look almost identical when young and especially when stressed, I got my chocolate brown coloured and now he looks like yours, but I only brought him as "Chocolate cichlid"
and as for sexing these guys can be hard to tell, I only knew with my old one because he developed the hump at around 7-8". Until then I can't tell you but I'm sure there are other guys here who can sex them for you.
Either way you have some beautiful looking chocolates there¬!
I want to say that they look like females but temporalis is a hard one to sex. I would wait until they get bigger and then maybe post more pics on here to see what others think then. Otherwise if you ever need to take them out of the tank for some reason you could check out the vents but I don't normally recommend doing this for no reason as it is just more stress on the fish. Good luck with them, they are great fish and I hope I have one again sometime.
They really are brilliant fish with great personality. The two fish are a different shape to each other with one being more stocky looking, dont know if that counts for much in sexing them. They also would flare and show off a little to each other but they're still young.
