Hey all,

My chocolate cichlid got attacked I think by my red Texas. Red Texas was young and pretty non violet but he may of hit maturity and went after the chocolate. (He’s no longer in the tank) His entire jaw is swollen and cut up it seems. It’s the strangest injury I’ve seen. Hasn’t eaten in a few days. Any advise would be helpful. See picture attached.

Add a little salt 1 tsp per g. Clean water. Reduce stress and monitor.

I agree keep a close eye to make sure it doesn't become infected. If it does, you may have to treat with an antibiotic. First, I would try either salt or melafix. If you see white fuzz on the wound that gets larger, then it is infected.

What kind of antibiotic? I believe that white fuzz you speak of is already on it. I thought it was a part of the healing process.

There are a few options. Some people use furan-2. Personally I would use iodine and then something to seal the wound like Hikari's bio-bandage, sine this flesh would is so large, that would help keep bacteria from re-entering. I would pull the fish from the tank, wait for it to stop flapping, then dab some iodine on the wound, then apply the bio bandage. After that I would keep the water very clean and keep the salt or melafix in the water until the wound heals up.

He didn’t make it through the night. That infection spread quick. Less then 48 hours from initial wound. So disappointing. Super healthy 8 inch Chocolate gone so quick. Hands down my favorite fish. Blah this sucks. Thanks all for the advise. Sad day though.
