Does anyone have experience with growing out Hyselecara temporalis to get a breeding pair? I'm considering purchasing 5 juveniles to grow out in a 75 gallon. I have another 60 gallon and a 75 gallon I can to remove individuals to if they get too aggressive. Just wondering what the experience has been for others that have tried this.

Ive grown one out, but never with conspecifics. Their aggression towards other cichlids is probably comparable to a Severum.

I think a 6 foot tank would better, especially because you're not going to be able to sex these guys until they spawn- which means you probably have to wait until they mature.

Okay thank you. I have other tanks they can go to if they start getting to aggressive. My main concern was catching the aggression too late. I'll just give it some more thought, the 6' tank is occupied with Tropheus at the moment.

Do a search on this site. There is at least one user who has several Chocolates in thei tank and aggression is not that bad. Tank size may be a factor, but compared to CA cichlids the aggression of most SA Cichlids, including Chocolates, is not as bad.

I'll try another search and see how it's turned out for others. The ultimate goal is to leave one breeding pair in the 75 gallon.

I think once they reach about 6" you can sex by the size and shape of their head, mine holds his own but not really a bully or bullied

I might hold off for awhile on the chocolates. I have a w/c group of Tropheus mpulungu in the 125 that are just now showing signs of breeding behavior. They are sort of an investment/pet so I will be keeping them for a couple of years at least. The chocolates were, to me, something I would get very attached to so I'll wait until I have a tank big enough to keep them all there life.
