i adopted a chocolate albino pleco from my sister. the most information i could find on here was that its actually an amelanomic chocolate pleco (not true albino) but i was hoping to find out the L number for use when talking on this site. i'm trying to figure out good tankmates for the little guy.

right now i just established a 20g (30" x 12" x 12") with some live plants, medium driftwood, and hiding rocks (red lava rocks with tunnels). i got 5 of the 1 1/2" tiger barbs in the 5g tank (pleco's old home from my sis) in isolation before i move them over to the 20g.

as far as i can find, the tiger barbs should be fine and leave the pleco alone, some posts on here mentioned having 6+ of them so i may add more (maybe 7 or 9 total in the tank? odd numbers to avoid pairing).

what else would make good tankmates for the dude? he's about 4" right now. i had seen some leopard puffers at the local petco but found out they are brackish fish and so those are out. i'm planning to upgrade to a medium sized tank (60-90g maybe) when things grow (and i am more experienced) so things that will outgrow in 3-6 months are ok!

Your chocolate pleco actually doesnt have any L numbers.. its once of those that are very common.. L xxx is usually for fish that are not classified or they dont bother to classify since theres too many species of them..

As for tankmates.. i currently have two of these guys.. a 10" and a 4"
I've had my 4" since it was a baby at .5" and they can tolorate a variety of tankmates.. just not RED DEVIL or Midas CICHLIDS.

For your 20gallon.. i suggest something simple and easy to maintain.. Clown locahes are great tankmates.. along with cory cats, and other plecos.. A 20gallon is really not a big tank.. but u should look into schooling fish like neon tetra, molly, even betta fish...

I've never had experience with puffer so i can't comment.. but i have heard that they are semi aggressive.

I would say that my local petcos aren't very well stocked in fish.. but petsmart has more variety for small tanks.. should look into that..
