I have a 125 gallon tank and I'm looking for the most compatible characin. I like the looks of the Boulengerella lateristriga (Striped characin) but it seems to like a lower ph than the maculata (Spotted characin) and Hujeta. My aquariums stays at about 7.6 range. I read the maculata doesn't do too well in captivity. I'm guessing the hujeta is the most tank friendly of these three?

Hi,

take hujeta (easiest) or lateristriga. Maculata gets too big.

Cheers

I agree

If you are able to lay your hands on a pair, take it.

When older, aggression CAN arise within the species, so a pair is fine. At a younger age, they do better in groups of at least 3-5.

I keep my pair with Hydrolycus scomberoides and Metynnis maculatus.

Well the payara is too big and I was looking for something that isn't silvery. I would have too many silvery fish with hujeta, bala, pictus. Any none silver fish 8 - 12 inches mid upper swimmers, non schooling, Hujeta compatible? I thought about leporinus but they can be nippy I hear.

Semaprochilodus taeniurus, or some geophagus maybe?
