Howdy,

I'm thinking of replacing my Silver Arowana with one of the Asian variety. I'm unsure what species I want to get (other than not getting an RTG as a friend has one). Other than choosing a color I like, is there any other factors that might determine which one I might prefer to get?

either way im jealous that you the option of have an A.A :)

I would get a MGBB for sure :P But thats looking into colors but on other aspects I heard that greens grow largest so if you are looking into something as small as possible maybe green isnt for you. (Dont know if its true tho)

RTG!!!!!!!

Well the decision you have is that if you like gold or red? Possibly the price as well. I believe rtg is cheap considering your in Canada but at least it has that gold variant compared to a green arowana. Then it goes on from there crossback and golden head which is on the other spectrum of the high price and color intensity. You also can say the same for red, there are low grade red which some people call 1.5 red or something like that then there are all kinds of other red that on the high end side. Those like Chili Red, Blood Red which also can come in different name from the farm in Asia their imported from. Each red has its own characteristic of coloration because they have different base color or density of red. It really hard to tell the quality of an arowana when young unless it comes from a reputable vendor or farm. Otherwise your best bet is to buy something around 8inch and up. Hope this help, I've traveled to east asian countries and gotten somewhat familiar with their fish market.

IMO it comes down to personal preference, but unless you're really on a budget then don't let the cost put you off going for a high grade fish. Spread over the life of the fish and compared to the cost of housing, feeding and maintaining such a big fish the difference in price is negligible to me, it will cost the same to care for regardless of whether you get an expensive VIP red or cheap green. Last thing you want to do is think 'damn I wish I hadn't been such a tight arse' when ever you look at your tank...
