I have narrowed down my long search to one genus while actually two but they contain the same fish Cryptoheros/Amatiltania . I was thinking maybe a pair of HRP or Septemfasciats (however you spell it). Or one male T-Bar or Kanna maybe a singe or pair of Panamensis I am hesitant on the pairs because there are no lfs near me which dont sell specifically saltwater fish or smell like urine. But on the other hand I dont know if cichlids get lonley.

Edit: Oh yea I am going to get a 29 gal or a 30b if I can find one.

Let me rephrase what I wrote into a question. Is tehre anyway I can slow down the breeding of fish like HRP's to almost none or would it be better to go with one fish like a male t bar or others of the same genus in a 29 gallon.

Keep the tank cold. It works for some people. A catfish *may* be able to eat fry as quickly as they are made if you choose the right one.

I'd say if you don't want breeding get two females or maybe just get a male. If eggs or fry disappear then sometimes the male can become abusive. Or so I've heard.

Maybe a cichlid with some other tankmates would be better :)

I would go with a lone male. 30 would be perfect for a lone male of any cryptoheros species with some dithers like swordtails.

Cryptoheros, especially those in the convict complex, are pretty much impossible to stop from breeding. M + F in tank = fry. Breeding pair of any of these fish could be done in a 30, but it's not guaranteed the male won't be a jerk and beat the female. Bigger tanks provide better success rates, but if you want to try in a 30 you can, just have a divider on hand.

They'll breed at 60F?

I wouldn't be surprised.
I also wouldn't keep them at 60* year round just because I want to stuff them into a tank. If they act lethargic and "less aggressive" because of the cold, that means to me that they aren't being kept at the right temperature. Nothing wrong with letting it dip to about 60* seasonally, as would happen in the wild. But I'd say they like it a bit warmer than that in general.

You can keep a pair. If you don't want babies, get a pleco. I guarantee it will eat any eggs that get laid within the first 2 days.
